When we talk about neurodiversity, we’re talking about difference; different ways of thinking, learning, processing, and experiencing the world.

It includes conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and more. These differences are a natural part of human diversity, and they bring strengths to our workplaces, such as creativity, problem-solving, focus, and fresh perspectives.

Yet too often, neurodivergent colleagues face barriers that others don’t. For example, recruitment processes may exclude people who communicate differently. Inflexible hours or noisy open-plan offices can make daily work harder and a lack of understanding around such issues can leave people feeling isolated or unsupported.

Our union’s Work Without Barriers campaign is about changing that. We’re pushing for workplaces that don’t just welcome neurodivergent people, but value and support them for all they are. And when we get this right, everyone benefits.

Inclusive workplaces don’t just help neurodivergent staff. They help us all. Clearer communication benefits every worker. Flexible working helps people balance life and work. Supportive environments improve wellbeing across the board. And by embracing different ways of thinking, we build stronger, more resilient teams.

Inclusion is not about special treatment. It’s about fairness, dignity, and opportunity for all. And as union members, we can help make that happen — by challenging myths, supporting fair practices, and standing together for change.

Together, we can make workplaces better for everyone.
