General Secretary

The General Secretary of Aegis shall:

  • Ensure employees are properly represented at all levels throughout the AEGON UK group of companies. All members should receive a consistent quality of service regardless of grade and location. The employee voice must be considered at the right levels in the organisation, for example pension trustees, EWC and Executive Board. Ensure there is an adequate ratio of Representatives to staff. All Representatives must be suitably trained and developed for their roles. An effective complaints procedure is to be available to highlight areas of concern.
  • Continue to add value for both Aegis and the employer by developing and implementing a strategy for Aegis which is aligned with the AEGON UK business strategy, external forces and the best interests of our members. A robust recognition agreement with the company is to be agreed that makes obtaining a certificate of independence and partnership working possible. Develop long-term and short-term plans to implement the strategy and monitor and review progress towards goals.
  • Enhance the visibility and reputation of Aegis internally and externally. Consistent and timely communications must be made to our members, representatives and AEGON UK using a variety of channels. Promote Aegis through membership of the appropriate external bodies. Gather and use the appropriate management information to promote Aegis to non-members and members alike. Contribute to government consultation papers on behalf of Aegis.
  • Ensure that Aegis and its representatives are compliant with legislation affecting employment, trade unions and their members. Keep abreast of legislative developments affecting trade unions and the employment relationship. Ensure the constitutional requirements of Aegis are met. Deal effectively with non-compliance. Identify risks and manage them to minimise their impact.
  • Develop and support the Aegis Executive in their roles. Performance manage the office staff, agreeing and following training and development plans which build their experience and competency in their roles. Coach office staff through casework where necessary. Set objectives for the Aegis Executive and monitor and review progress.
  • Increase Aegis funds to a level which allows us to continue to protect our members. Develop accurate cost projections and budgets. Review investment performance. Investigate ways to increase revenue. Targets to be agreed.
  • Be accountable for business area activity ensuring adherence to consultative practice and protocol. Ensure regular meetings with Representatives and management take place and constitutional requirements are met
  • Regular meetings should be timetabled and it is a responsibility of this role to make sure these take place and are minuted. Additionally all unresolved issues should be escalated to either the next Central Council meeting or Executive Committee meeting.
